The First Conversations

In palliative care, the very first conversation begins with listening.
We ask:
“What do you understand about your illness?”
“What matters most to you right now?”
“What are your biggest hopes or worries?”
These questions open the door to trust and allow us to align care with each person’s values. Palliative care is an extra layer of support—relieving symptoms, guiding decisions, and honoring the stories that shape meaning.
It is more about holding space for emotions, priorities, and what it means to live fully despite illness.
As Dr. Atul Gawande reminds us: “Our ultimate goal, after all, is not a good death but a good life to the very end.”
