Prognostic Tools in Advanced Dementia

In “terminal dementia/advanced dementia” ,simply being admitted to the hospital with an acute illness can be associated with a poor prognosis .

Research shows:
6-month mortality after hospitalization for pneumonia is 53% in terminal dementia
55% of patients who suffer a new hip fracture die within 6 months

Importantly, prognosis in terminal dementia is shaped not only by the illness itself, but also by the goals of care and decisions about whether to treat complications such as sepsis or malnutrition aggressively.

These are difficult but essential conversations, ensuring care remains aligned with the person’s values and quality of life.
