Can Cannabinoids Help the Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease?

A recent randomized control trial studied a very low-dose combination of THC and CBD in older adults with Alzheimer’s over 26 weeks.
Participants receiving cannabinoids showed slightly improved cognitive scores, with no major safety concerns.
Earlier studies using low-dose synthetic THC alone did not show clear benefit for behavioral symptoms of dementia.
However, newer research using THC and CBD together at carefully titrated doses (weekly) appears more promising and feasible in medically complex older adults.
Dosing follows a simple principle: start low, go slow — often beginning around a quarter to half a milligram of THC with CBD and increasing gradually.
Cannabinoids are promising, but not yet standard care.
